The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 3 in-training position for the NCR Materials Office.
In this position you will assist the Region Materials Engineer in the pavement design, small foundations design, soil infiltration design, and provides construction support related to pavement concerns.
This position supports WSDOT’s mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality for people and businesses by supporting the Region’s stewardship of its transportation system by ensuring that the proper materials are used on construction projects and the proper preservation techniques are used on the Region’s roadway.
What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Engineer 3 will: Perform pavement investigations, determines pavement integrity, surfacing quality, and soil bearing values.
Ability to apply WSDOT Pavement Policy guidelines and engineering principles on Preservation Design Projects.
Consult with HQ Pavement in evaluating pavement preservation design to effective solutions are developed to meet budget constraints and address roadway preservation needs.
Consult with Region Maintenance to evaluate pavement performance.
Consult with Region Program Management to insure P1 Project Delivery constraints are met.
Prepare small foundation reports for illumination and ITS systems in accordance with HQ Geotech manual design criteria.
Consult with Project Office their project’s illumination or ITS small foundation needs.
Prepare Infiltration Reports.
Coordinate with Project Office regarding highway runoff needs.
Qualifications Please note this position has been approved for in-training.
Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Engineer 2 or Transportation Engineer 3, depending on qualifications.
Required qualifications at the Transportation Engineer 2 level: Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, construction management, or similar field.
OR Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent.
Required qualifications at the Transportation Engineer 3 level: One (1) year of experience as Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent.
Knowledge of Pavement Preservation Techniques.
Experience in estimating construction projects.
The ability to utilize all computer software used in foundation and pavement design.
Highway school diploma or GED equivalent.
Valid Driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management or similar field.
Experience with Washington State Pavement Management System.
Field work experience with soil and pavement investigations.
Pavement or small foundation design or engineering geology.
Working knowledge of the WSDOT Pavement Policy.
Important Notes This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
