The Director of Risk Management is responsible for risk management for the organization in the areas of patient safety and quality improvement, patient care complaint resolution, claims management and insurance management.
Also administers and directs the Workers’ Compensation and Safety Program to develop and maintain a safe work environment.
Position Reports To: VP Risk & Regulatory Essential Functions: Directs the evaluation of patient safety events for severity, frequency, and probability of financial loss to enhance patient safety.
Directs the organization’s response to patient care complaints.
Develops loss controls measures related to patient care complaints including, but not limited to, billing adjustments, access to medical care, and the provision of certain treatments when appropriate.
Directs and oversees the Workers' Compensation program ensuring compliance with legal requirements and working towards claims reduction.
Conducts and coordinates root cause analysis investigations, creates action plans to address findings, and ensures continued adherence to RCA action plans.
Directs the risk investigation of all identified potentially compensable events (patient, visitor, employee, and product).
Evaluates the investigation of all claim files on a routine basis.
Manages the claims process, liaisons with outside counsel, informs claims committee, and negotiates settlements of medical malpractice claims in conjunction with claims committee.
Presents summary information to internal claims team and outside legal counsel with an opinion as to potential for litigation and legal defense posture.
Responds to professional liability and hospital liability questions posed by organization staff Assists in managing the liability insurance portfolio for the organization including professional/general liability, Director’s & Officer’s liability, employment liability, auto liability, property liability and other business exposures.
Is involved in Ethical dilemmas through direct consultation, reviewing applicable policies, and providing education and proctoring regarding patients’ rights.
Establishes policies, educational programs, and reporting mechanisms to the appropriate areas.
Participates as a member of appropriate committees and task forces assigned to improve quality, safety, and reduce organizational risk.
Manages the day to day operations of the Risk Management Department including staffing and budget.
Responsible for hiring, professional development, performance evaluations, discipline, and termination of staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.

Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree.
6 years of relevant leadership experience including 3 years as a manager Strong communication skills, project management skills, problem solving skills and change management skills.

Ability to develop partnerships, teamwork and good working relationships.
Understands the complexities of a large organization; involves others as appropriate.
Demonstrates sounds business judgement.
